Board Members' Job Description

Function of the Board of Directors:

It is the board that is ultimately responsible for making sure that the Literacy Council of Reading Berks fulfils its mission.

Responsibilities of Board members:

  • - Understand LCRB's mission and vision
  • - Set policy for LCRB
  • - Make sure that effective organizational planning takes place
  • - Make sure that funds are properly managed
  • - Know the board's legal obligations and make sure they are followed
  • - Approve the hiring of executive director, based on the recommendation of the personnel committee
  • - Represent interests of LCRB in their region

  • What is expected of board members?

  • - Understand the LCRB's bylaws, policies, and strategic plan
  • - Attend a majority of regularly scheduled meetings
  • - Be a paid member of the organization; financially support organization
  • - Access to e-mail and the Internet, if possible: LCRB does some of its work online
  • - Participate in one or more committees and possibly chair one
  • - Prepare for meetings by reading background material

  • Expected Time Commitment:

  • - Board members serve a three-year term and may serve a maximum of two terms
  • - Your role as a LCRB board member should take about six hours per month
